{"id":5310,"date":"2019-09-26T08:54:21","date_gmt":"2019-09-26T06:54:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.samita.be\/?p=5310"},"modified":"2019-09-26T08:54:21","modified_gmt":"2019-09-26T06:54:21","slug":"upasaka-ordination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.samita.be\/en\/2019\/09\/26\/upasaka-ordination\/","title":{"rendered":"Up\u0101saka\u00a0ordination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<h5><em>19th October 2019<\/em><\/h5>\n<p>During our <em>Kathina<\/em>\u00a0day at Tilorien Monastery on Saturday 19th October, one of our lay supporters will take the 8 precepts to become an <em>Up\u0101saka<\/em> for life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Up\u0101saka<\/em> (masculine) and <em>Up\u0101sik\u0101<\/em> (feminine) were the titles given to followers of the Buddha who undertook certain vows, but were not monks, nuns, or novice monastics. These titles are from the P\u0101li words meaning \u201cto sit close\u201d (up\u0101sati) and \u201cto attend to\u201d (up\u0101sana).\u00a0Over time, the terms have come to mean \u201cdedicated lay practitioner,\u201d and to connote a lay person who has made a total commitment to the study and practice of the Buddhadhamma.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/ec02124792787b69fe829237a\/images\/c7fe6c7f-be1d-4058-b4d1-3583a069d0aa.jpeg\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" data-file-id=\"4344557\" data-cke-saved-src=\"https:\/\/gallery.mailchimp.com\/ec02124792787b69fe829237a\/images\/c7fe6c7f-be1d-4058-b4d1-3583a069d0aa.jpeg\" \/><br \/>\nThe purpose of taking formal ordination as an <em>Up\u0101saka<\/em> or\u00a0<em>Up\u0101sik\u0101<\/em> is to strengthen one\u2019s commitment and to declare that commitment openly to the community. It should never be taken lightly.<\/p>\n<p>At the same occasion, we will also give the possibility to all lay participants to (re-)take the 5 precepts.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to come for the ceremony, but live too far away and would like to stay overnight, <a href=\"https:\/\/tilorien.org\/en\/contact\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/tilorien.org\/en\/contact\/\">please let us know a.s.a.p<\/a>.
